These wide-open blood vessels lead to very low blood pressure. As a result, the blood bypasses the lungs, leading to hypoxia. We do not know why some patients with cirrhosis develop high pulmonary artery pressure, others develop low pulmonary artery pressure, and others retain normal pulmonary artery pressure.
